Blue Water Acoustic Research at APL-UW
is directed toward a complete understanding of the basic physics of low-frequency, long-range, broadband acoustic propagation across deep ocean basins. Acoustic signals decohere in space and time as they propagate, and this loss of coherence places a fundamental limit on the performance of algorithms designed to extract the signals from the undersea ambient noise. We explore these limits and use the acoustic signals to infer knowledge of the oceanographic structures of the water mass through which the signal has traveled.
