1. This week two measurements were made at the SAX99 site from the R/V Tommy Munro: (1) Roger Flood surveyed the site with his Simrad EM3000 system to obtain high resolution bathymetry, and (2) Bob Stoll completed a set of low frequency compressional sediment sound speed measurements.
The EM3000 results turned out to be very useful. The region defined by the Seward Johnson anchor positions (see DRI Update of 16 Sept.) appears uniform, but just to the west there is a trough about 3 m deep aligned along a NW-SE axis. The EM3000 backscatter level was less in the trough suggesting mud, and this was confirmed with a grab sample taken by Bob Stoll. The tentative APL BAMS tower position turned out to be on the sloping edge of this trough, and thus we expect to move the BAMS position to the north, closer to shore. The XBAMS, low frequency, CSS, and the APL and ARL penetration sites are not affected by the trough. The EM3000 data displays are impressive.
Bob Stoll felt that he obtained good data for obtaining low frequency compressional sound speeds for the top meter of sediment. These results will be compared with higher frequency measurements obtained in the coming weeks to examine compression sound speed dispersion.
2. For those planning to come to the Sandman Motel/Suites near Fort Walton Beach (the motel is actually in West Destin), we have at this point rooms 302, 303, 304, 306, and 307. When arriving, go directly to Kate Bader's room (304) to get your key. There is no need to stop by the main office to check in. Kate can be reached at cell phone number (206) 890 1096 or by calling the Sandman Motel at (850) 243-1511 Ex. 304. If you do contact the main office, keep in mind that they tend to think of our group as the group from the University of Washington, since we made the arrangements. The main office is not open later than about 9 pm.
