1. THE BIG PICTURE
From SeaTac airport, the usual route heads south on I-5, then crosses Puget Sound over the Narrows Bridge at Tacoma. It then goes north up the Kitsap Peninsula on Hwy 16 and on Hwy 3 beyond Bremerton. This route takes about 1 hr under good driving conditions. However, the Narrows Bridge is a traffic bottleneck during "rush hour," and if you are unlucky and there is an accident, or even a stalled car on the bridge or its approaches, you might be caught in a major traffic tie-up. Listen to AM radio KIRO 710, or KOMO 1000 for frequent traffic reports (and sometimes ferry info) during rush hour.
Alternative routes cross Puget Sound on Washington State ferries from Seattle. All ferry routes will take longer than the bridge option under good driving conditions, but under bad conditions they could be considerably quicker. The most direct route, involving the least driving, is on the Seattle-Bremerton ferry. The Seattle- Bainbridge Island (Winslow) ferry leads to a more round-about route, but the time to get from Seattle to Silverdale is about the same as via the Bremerton. Also, the Bainbridge Island ferry departs about every 45 minutes while the Bremerton ferry departs about every 70 minutes.
You can avoid downtown Seattle with the Seattle-Fauntleroy/Southworth ferry, without much change in travel time. This route is the least likely to be affected by traffic congestion.
If you arrive late and need to eat, the restaurant at the hotel is open until 10 pm. From the hotel entrance you can see a 24 hr Shari's Restaurant within walking distance.
The following directions drew from those on the WestCoast Silverdale Hotel web site.
2. FROM SEATAC TO SIVERDALE VIA TACOMA AND THE NARROWS BRIDGE
[The recommended route unless there is significant traffic congestion.]
The route from SeaTac to I-5 is well signed. Mileage begins where SR- 518 from SeaTac merges with I-5. The leftmost lane on I-5 south is for 2- person carpools.
Among the sights you may see are Mt. Rainier and the Cascade Mountains to the east, and the Olympic Mountains to the west.
Mile 0 : Take I-5 South to Tacoma.
Mile 21: Take Hwy. 16 West/Bremerton Exit (about 1 mile South of the Tacoma Dome). Exit from either of the 2 RIGHT lanes, even though 3 of 7 exit, as the 3rd from the right does not go to Hwy 16. Do not move right as the lane merging in from the right exits almost immediately. -Follow Hwy. 16 West, even though it heads more north than west.
Mile 27: The Narrows Bridge, whose predecessor was the famed Galloping Gertie you probably saw collapsing in a 1st year physics movie on resonances.
Mile 48: Hwy. 16 West becomes Hwy. 3 North near Bremerton. -Use the 2nd lane from the left as the left lane goes south on Hwy. 3 and the right lane eventually goes into Bremerton. Stay on Hwy. 3 North. You will see the water on the right as you reach this point. Note the naval ships, including aircraft carriers, and the naval shipyards on the north side of Sinclair Inlet. -Follow any signs marked Hood Canal Bridge.
Mile 57: Note the sign to the Silverdale Hotel, there is also one at the exit to Newberry Hill Road.
Mile 58: Exit Hwy. 3 North at Newberry Hill Road. 59 -Turn RIGHT at bottom of the exit ramp onto Silverdale Way.
Mile 59: Follow Silverdale Way as it bends to the left along the shore, then turn RIGHT at the stoplight on Bucklin Hill Rd. Continue about 100 yds and the Silverdale Hotel is on the RIGHT.
3. TO SILVERDALE VIA FERRIES ACROSS PUGET SOUND
Check the Washington State Ferry web site
http:// www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/
for fares and more complete schedules to Bremerton, Bainbridge Island (Winslow), and Southworth. All departure times given below are valid until 6/17/00. Note that the website mentions that vehicles must be ticketed and in line at least 20 minutes prior to the published departure time or you may not be loaded, but the ferry people are usually more flexible than that.
Ferries leave Seattle for Bremerton and Bainbridge Island from Pier 52, near the south end of the downtown Seattle waterfront. It takes about as long to get from Seattle to Silverdale via Bremerton as via Bainbridge Island, so take the route with the earliest departure.
TO THE DOWNTOWN SEATTLE FERRIES
From SeaTac head NORTH on I-5. Take (right) exit 164B for 4th Ave. S. Signs direct you to use this exit for ferries and the Kingdome. (Unless they have been removed due to the Kingdome implosion.)
Stay in the RIGHT lane on the exit ramp and turn RIGHT onto 4th Ave. S. Take the first RIGHT onto Royal Brougham Way, heading WEST.
Follow signs and lane directions to the ferry dock:
Stay in the CENTER Lane.
Turn RIGHT under the viaduct,
staying in the LEFT lane.
Turn RIGHT onto Alaska Way.
Turn LEFT into the ferry terminal.

From SeaTac exit go WEST on 518 (instead of east to I-5). Continue west past 509 where 518 becomes S.W. 148th St. At the 4th stoplight, turn RIGHT onto Ambaum Blvd. Continue north several miles on Ambaum Blvd. as it turns into 16th Ave. Turn LEFT at S.W. 107th St. (between the Taco Bell and Texaco), which becomes S.W. 106th St. after a bend. 4. FROM THE SILVERDALE HOTEL TO THE BANGOR MAIN GATE
Although on maps it looks like you can take Clear Creek Road, do not try it. It takes 10-15 minutes to get from the hotel to the main gate, and about 5 minutes from the main gate to Olympic Haus.
From Bucklin Hill Rd. turn RIGHT at the first stoplight onto Silverdale Way. The turn is just before the stoplight. Turn LEFT at the next stoplight onto Kitsap Mall Blvd. It has a sign to Hwy 3. Get in the RIGHT lane. Turn RIGHT at the 3rd stoplight (less than 1 mile) onto Hwy. 3 north (toward the Hood Canal Bridge and Poulsbo). Take the 2nd exit to SUBASE BANGOR MAIN GATE, and follow the signs. Stay in the LEFT 2 lanes of the exit ramp. The big double peaked mountain is The Brothers. Parking at the Main gate is on the RIGHT. Register at the Main gate and get a map to Olympic Haus.

7. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The WestCoast Silverdale Hotel web site is at
http://www.westcoasthotels.com/silverdale/
It has a map showing the location of Silverdale relative to Seattle. Among other links, the hotel's site includes links to
Facilities at the WestCoast Silverdale Hotel include a tennis court, a horse shoe pit, a swimming pool and hot tub, a sauna, an exercise room and a game room. Other activities include beach walking and aquatic bird watching. If anyone expresses an interest beforehand, my wife, Terry, will try to locate a nearby American Bald Eagle nest.
Some nearby nautical attractions include the Naval Undersea Warfare Museum in Keyport. In Bremerton there is a Naval Museum near the Ferry dock and the destroyer Turner Joy is open for tours. The aircraft carriers and other ships in Sinclair Inlet at Bremerton can be seen from Hwy. 304 along the north shore, about 3 miles from Hwy 3, but they are not open for tours and it is the off season for Harbor Tours.
