DRI Update: 12 December 2000

1. The next SAX99 meeting will be held at the Stennis Space Center 16-18 January 2001 (as first announced in email dated 31 August 2000 from Mike Richardson). The meeting will end at noon on the 18th. The meeting format will be as suggested by Rob Wheatcroft during the Bangor meeting in April. No individual presentations are expected, but instead a series of topical sessions will be conducted. Topic areas (preferably in the form of questions) and volunteers to organize and run sessions are being solicited. For example: "What are the appropriate values of input parameters required by poro-elastic propagation models for sediments off Fort Walton Beach?" Please send your suggested topics and list of volunteers to Mike. A meeting program will be compiled from these suggestions and distributed before the meeting. 2. A day-long special session titled "High-Frequency Sediment Acoustics and Associated Sediment Properties and Processes" was held at the ASA meeting last week in Newport Beach. Much of the session was devoted to SAX99 results.
3. Two overview papers on SAX99 will appear in the winter 2001 special issue of IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering on High-Frequency Acoustics, one on acoustic measurements (Thorsos et al.) and one on environmental considerations (Richardson et al.).
4. Six papers describing SAX99 results will be presented at the Acoustical Oceanography Conference to be held by the Institute of Acoustics, Underwater Acoustics Group at the University of Southampton (UK). The conference will be held during 9-12 April 2001. The papers submitted for the conference are being posted on the DRI website and can be downloaded as pdf files. The papers are presently under review, and thus some revisions will likely be made. Note that these preliminary versions are denoted by (P) and will be replaced by the final versions, to be denoted by (F), as they become available. 5. The call for papers for a second special issue of IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering can be viewed on the DRI website. This special issue (October 2001) will be devoted to High-Frequency (> 1 kHz) Sediment Acoustics and Associated Sediment Properties and Processes. Papers are due 1 March 2001.
